A stack of brightly colored book covers, all Jewish genre fiction

•the 2025 Jewish Genre Reading Challenge•

Are you a Jewish reader curious to read about characters like you?

Are you a non-Jewish reader looking to diversify your reading and expand your idea of who a Jewish character can be?

Are you a genre reader - a reader of romance, mystery, science fiction,
and more - who has ever thought to yourself,

“I wonder why I don’t find more Jewish characters in genre fiction?”

come read with us!

The Jewish Genre Challenge is a reading journey through the incredible diversity of Jewish existence, from the sexy feminist heroine of The Roommate to the hardboiled detective of Redemption Street, from the space warriors of the Metzada Mercenary Corps to the badass queer Rabbi Who Prayed With Fire. Find Jewish characters living in the genres you already read and love, or use the challenge as a chance to broaden your reading horizons.

February's Genre of the Month is:

URBAN FANTASY/ PARANORMAL

From vampires to estries, dybbuks to werewolves, Jewish paranormal and urban fantasy fiction explores the intersection of Jewishness and the supernatural. Whether calling on Jewish mythology like dybbuks, golems, or estries, or following urban fantasy conventions by tossing a fiesty Jewish hero into the midst of some very strange situations, these books are serving up Jewish stories with a twist!

When I'm reading a sci-fi, thriller, romance, or other genre book and the main character happens to be Jewish, I'm always intrigued to find that. Jewish characters don't show up often in genre fiction.
